...and for two Jewish kids to take 1st and 2nd place in the annual Glowatz Gingerbread House Competition....

Naturally the judging was biased mr. name on his house.
ReplyDeletepleez. first of all, they had no idea what J Strom even meant. second of all, every single person's name was on the inside of the piece of paper that was right next to each and every gingerbread house. how easy it would have been to look inside each slip of paper and see which house belonged to which person. youz just JEALOUS
ReplyDeleteJoel while it was true that if the judges had WANTED to know who made each house they easily could have. The judges, however, did not want to know who made each house in order to preserve anonymous judging. That is why the names were hidden and not displayed. By displaying a name on the house the judges have no choice but to know who made that house (which they do not want to know).
ReplyDeleteThat being said they did not know that it was your house b/c of the J Strom and I believe that it in no way affected their judging. In addition we did not clearly state that no identifying marks were allowed (it was implied and should have been obvious but it was not clearly stated. If someone did put their name then they would have been disqualified but the judges wouldn't know what J Strom meant so that was ok). The rule is now set that no identifying marks of any type are allowed on the house so next year, even if it is an obscure reference that only a few people will get (and the judges will most likely not) that will still be grounds for disqualification.
Anyway... Well done sir. You made one hell of a house and you and chad deserved those spots.

Yeah, i'm not saying that the judges wanted to cheat in any way and know who had made each house. I'm just saying that they wouldn't have needed identifying marks to be able to know. For that reason I think for next year we should make a separate list of which person each numbered house belongs to and keep that list in a completely separate location than where the house are just to avoid any suspicion on the part of the contestants and any temptation on the part of the judges.
ReplyDeleteBut i do agree that an identifying mark would leave the judges no choice but to know who did that house and would therefore make their opinion/judging biased. Which is why i ALSO agree that identifying marks of any kind should be forbidden and grounds for disqualification. In all honestly I didn't consider the fact that 'J Strom' may have been an identifying mark when i put it on my house and wouldn't have included it if i thought it would give me any unfair advantage or affect the judging in any way. You can be assured I will do nothing of the sort in the future.
